Haredi Enlistment
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited the Haredi Hashmonaim Brigade and said he expects to see a Haredi IDF chief of staff in the future.
“Anyone who does not study Torah must enlist. And when he enlists, he must have the right to enter as Haredi and leave as Haredi. My grandfather did not see a contradiction between Torah study and carrying a weapon. He thought the opposite. He believed Torah study gives you the strength to carry a weapon. Today, we need to renew that idea. I respect the world of Torah, but anyone who does not study Torah should serve in the army.”
Netanyahu added: “The first Haredi chief of staff will come from your ranks, and I intend to be at his ceremony, even if I am not the one pinning on his ranks.”
