Alexander Filin HY”D, an IDF reservist and lone immigrant from Ukraine, fell yesterday in an explosive device blast in Taybeh in southern Lebanon.
Filin, 29, lived in Haifa and served as a combat soldier in the 36th Division headquarters. The IDF said he fell in combat in southern Lebanon. Israeli media reported that seven other soldiers were wounded in the incident.
A Lone Soldier
Filin immigrated to Israel alone from Ukraine about 14 years ago through the Naale program. In 2018, Israel chose him as a President’s Outstanding Soldier. Two years earlier, he neutralized a terrorist during an attack at the Shechem checkpoint.
“I took part in an incident involving a terrorist at the Shechem checkpoint who wanted to harm my friend,” Filin said in the past. “We shot him, and I basically neutralized him, and that is how I saved my friend’s life.”
He added: “You deal with difficult things in the IDF, and you do not think about the outside. We protect the civilians and the country.”
Chose Israel
In the same interview, Filin explained why he chose the Nahal Brigade as a lone soldier.
“Because I am an immigrant from Ukraine, they did not let me enlist in an elite unit,” he said. “I did not have good Hebrew, and I also did not have security clearance, so I chose to enlist in Nahal.”

He added: “I am with many soldiers like me, so I do not feel alone. I love life in Israel more than in Ukraine.”
His words captured the story of many lone soldiers. They arrive without family nearby, yet they choose to carry the burden of defending the Jewish state.
Standing In The Breach
For Israelis and Americans alike, Filin’s story reflects a shared value: free nations survive because citizens choose duty over comfort.
The Tanakh speaks of those who “stand in the breach” for the land. Filin’s life gave that phrase a modern Israeli face.
He came to Israel alone, built a life here, saved a fellow soldier, and later fell defending the country he loved.
May his memory be blessed.
