Mass Protests in Tirana
Thousands of protesters have filled the streets of Tirana, Albania’s capital, in recent days. The demonstrations have become one of the largest protest movements the country has seen in years.
The protests focus on a luxury real estate and tourism project linked to Jared Kushner’s investment firm, Affinity Partners. The project covers Sazan Island and the coastal area of Zvërnec.
Protecting Albania’s Coastline
Protesters say the development could damage a sensitive ecosystem that supports flamingos, nesting sea turtles, seals and other protected species.
They have already named the movement the “Flamingo Revolution.” Inflatable flamingos and large signs of the pink bird have become symbols of the campaign against what protesters call the “sale of national assets.”

For many protesters, the issue goes beyond politics. They say Albania must protect its coastline, wildlife, natural habitats and public land from large-scale development.
The area has become a symbol of a broader question facing the country: how to balance tourism, foreign investment and economic growth with respect for local land, native species and environmental responsibility.
The Israel Conspiracy Theory
Alongside the environmental concerns, the deal has also sparked conspiracy theories about Israel and Gaza.
Some claim that Israel secretly “bought” land in Albania to move residents of Gaza there. No evidence supports that claim.
Kushner’s investment firm links to the project, and public reports describe it as a luxury tourism development. Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has also strongly denied reports about relocating Gazans to Albania.
The real dispute in Albania centers on land, development and the future of a sensitive coastal area. The Gaza claim turns that local controversy into a false conspiracy theory about Israel.
In reality, the protests deserve attention for what they are: a fight over Albania’s coastline, its wildlife and the future of one of the country’s most sensitive natural areas.
