Near Disaster

An IDF training accident nearly ended in disaster after soldiers reportedly fired a live mortar shell instead of a training round.

According to journalist Yinon Shalom Yitah, the incident took place during a dry training exercise in a base firing zone in southern Israel. The force reportedly confused the type of munition and launched a live mortar during the drill.

The shell, which contained explosives, detonated just meters from a group of soldiers in the area.

By a great miracle, no one was hurt.

Live Mortar Fired

The report said the soldiers had been training on mortar fire when the dangerous mistake happened.

A dry exercise is meant to simulate military activity without using live explosive fire in a way that endangers troops nearby. In this case, however, the force reportedly fired a real mortar shell instead of a practice round.

That turned a routine training moment into a near-disaster.

Mortars are powerful indirect-fire weapons. Soldiers use them to hit targets from a distance, often beyond direct line of sight. That is why strict handling, identification, and safety procedures matter so much during training.

One mistake with the wrong munition can become fatal in seconds.

A Miracle and a Warning

The incident ended without casualties, but the danger was real.

For the soldiers nearby, the difference between tragedy and survival came down to meters.

Israel’s soldiers train under intense pressure because the country faces active threats on multiple fronts. The IDF must prepare for war in Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, Judea and Samaria, and beyond.

But training also demands discipline. Every shell, round, and weapon must match the exercise. Every safety rule exists because lives depend on it.

This time, Israel received a miracle.

Now, the lesson is clear: even in training, the battlefield can appear in an instant.
