Mike Huckabee Questions UK Sanctions on Judea and Samaria

Mike Huckabee criticized UK sanctions targeting Israeli communities in Judea and Samaria, questioning why Britain was placing such emphasis on Israel. The U.S. ambassador to Israel challenged London’s priorities as Britain moved to ban goods produced in Israeli communities beyond the Green Line. The British government says the restrictions are intended to pressure Israel over settlement construction and protect the possibility of a two-state solution.

“If Britain is truly interested in addressing issues it considers unacceptable, where are the sanctions against North Korea, China, and Russia?” Huckabee asked. He argued that the British policy discriminates against Israel and the Jewish people. At the same time, he acknowledged Britain’s sovereign right to set its own policy, while noting that the United States also retains the right to respond.

Huckabee’s criticism centers on that question: whether Israel is being measured by the same standards Britain applies elsewhere, or whether the Jewish state is receiving exceptional scrutiny.

Britain’s new policy bans imports of goods produced in Israeli settlements in Judea and Samaria. Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband is expected to present the measure as part of a broader response to settlement expansion, including the E1 project east of Jerusalem. London argues that such construction threatens the territorial viability of a future Palestinian state.

The British government has repeatedly stated that it considers Israeli settlements illegal under international law. Prime Minister Andy Burnham said on Monday that Britain would announce “comprehensive measures” in response to continued settlement expansion. Britain had already strengthened guidance discouraging companies from conducting business in Israeli communities beyond the Green Line.

Huckabee’s rhetorical challenge does require an important factual distinction. Britain does maintain extensive sanctions against Russia and a formal sanctions regime against North Korea. It also maintains an arms embargo and export restrictions involving China, although Britain does not operate a China-wide economic sanctions regime comparable to its Russia measures.

His argument, therefore, is better understood as criticism of Britain’s priorities and treatment of Israel rather than a literal claim that London has imposed no restrictions on those countries. The UK has maintained exceptionally broad sanctions against Russia following its invasion of Ukraine, with further designations continuing into September 2026.

That distinction does not eliminate the larger political question Huckabee raised. Britain is now creating a specific trade prohibition aimed at Israeli civilian communities while relations with Jerusalem are already strained. The symbolic impact is considerably larger than the expected economic effect, since settlement products represent only a small part of overall UK-Israel trade.

Israel Pushes Back Against British Pressure

Israeli officials have responded aggressively to the British move. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich called for the British ambassador to be expelled, while National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir proposed an entirely different form of diplomatic retaliation. He urged Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to recognize Argentina’s sovereignty claim over the Falkland Islands and impose sanctions on Britain.

Huckabee’s intervention carries additional weight because it comes from Washington rather than Jerusalem. The Trump administration has taken a markedly different approach toward Israeli communities in Judea and Samaria than many European governments. Huckabee himself has long rejected terminology that treats Jewish presence in the biblical heartland as inherently illegitimate.

His defense of Israeli communities has not meant ignoring wrongdoing by individuals. Only days earlier, Huckabee condemned violent attacks against Palestinians and described those responsible as terrorists. He also stressed that the perpetrators represent a tiny fraction of the Israelis living in Judea and Samaria and should not define the entire population.

That distinction strengthens the principle behind his criticism of Britain. Criminal violence can be condemned and prosecuted without treating hundreds of thousands of Israeli residents, businesses, and communities as collectively responsible. A policy aimed broadly at commerce raises different questions from sanctions against individuals accused of violence.

Equal Standards Between Democratic Allies

The controversy touches a principle important to both Israel and the United States: allies can disagree without abandoning consistent standards. America’s civic tradition places equality before the law and resistance to discriminatory treatment near the center of its national identity. Israel’s covenantal responsibility is distinct, rooted in Jewish sovereignty, the Land of Israel, and the obligation to protect Jewish life and continuity.

Where those missions meet is in the belief that justice loses credibility when rules appear to change depending on the country involved. Israel does not need immunity from criticism, and the United States does not demand that its allies approve every Israeli policy. But criticism carries greater moral authority when standards are applied consistently.

Britain argues that its measures are narrowly directed at settlements and do not constitute a boycott of Israel as a whole. British officials have also stressed that Israel remains an important trading partner, with bilateral trade worth billions of pounds annually.

Huckabee is challenging the political message behind the policy rather than its economic scale. By publicly comparing Britain’s treatment of Israel with its responses to authoritarian powers, he is forcing London to explain why this particular territorial dispute warrants a targeted commercial ban.

The argument now extends beyond one British sanctions package. Israeli ministers are considering diplomatic retaliation, Washington is publicly defending Israel, and London is moving further away from the approach favored by the Trump administration. What began as a trade measure concerning Judea and Samaria is becoming another test of how Western allies define fairness, sovereignty, and friendship with the Jewish state.
