JD Vance Lebanon remarks drew attention after the U.S. vice president responded to an open letter from Samir Geagea, head of the Lebanese Forces party.
Geagea addressed the letter to Vance on June 22. In it, he called for the United States to separate Lebanon from negotiations with Iran. He also urged Washington to strengthen Lebanese state institutions and reject any role for Tehran in Lebanon’s affairs.
The issue goes to the heart of sovereignty. Proverbs teaches, “A king gives stability to the land by justice.” In other words, a country needs lawful authority, not militias or foreign powers, to secure its future.

Vance responded by stressing that Washington sees Lebanon’s official leadership as the country’s legitimate authority.
“The United States regards the President of Lebanon, General Joseph Aoun, and the Government of Lebanon as the sole legitimate authority in the country,” Vance wrote.
He added that Washington intends to work with the Lebanese state so it can defend its sovereignty and establish its legal authority.
That message directly challenges Hezbollah’s claim to act above the state. It also rejects Iran’s attempt to treat Lebanon as a regional pressure card.
Iran, Hezbollah, And State Control
Vance also addressed U.S. contacts with Iran regarding Lebanon.
According to his response, those contacts do not aim to give Tehran a role in deciding Lebanon’s future. Instead, he said the goal is to ensure that Iran pressures Hezbollah to meet its commitments and obligations.
That point connects to Washington’s broader message on Iran’s proxy network. As covered earlier in “Rubio Stands With Israel: Iran’s Proxies Keep Launching Missiles,” U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the fighting cannot end while Iran’s proxies continue launching missiles.
For Israel, the principle is clear. Peace cannot rest on Iranian influence or Hezbollah weapons. It must rest on sovereign governments that control their own territory.
Lebanon’s Path Forward
Geagea’s appeal reflects a wider Lebanese demand for independence from Hezbollah and Iran.
For many Lebanese Christians and sovereignty-minded citizens, the issue is not only diplomacy. It is whether Lebanon can recover its state, its borders, and its future.
Ultimately, a Lebanon free from Hezbollah’s grip would serve the Lebanese people first. It would also create a more serious path toward stability with Israel.
