JD Vance: Israel Staying In Lebanon Over Hezbollah Threat

Vice President JD Vance said Israel has no territorial intentions in southern Lebanon, but remains concerned about Hezbollah fighters near its border

JD Vance said Israel has made clear that it has no territorial ambitions in southern Lebanon, while explaining that Jerusalem’s concern centers on Hezbollah fighters near Israel’s border.

The statement matters because Israel’s northern front is not a dispute with the Lebanese people. It is a security confrontation with Hezbollah, an Iranian-backed terror army embedded inside Lebanon.

The Tanakh teaches: “The prudent one sees danger and takes cover” (Proverbs 22:3). Israel’s position follows that principle. A country that sees Hezbollah rebuilding across its border cannot pretend the danger disappeared.

JD Vance On Israel’s Security

A reporter asked Vance whether the United States wants Israel to withdraw its forces from southern Lebanon.

“The Israelis have made it very clear that they have no territorial intentions in southern Lebanon,” Vance said.

He added that Israel believes it needs to stay there because of concerns about Hezbollah fighters in southern Lebanon.

That framing is important. Israel is not claiming Lebanese land. It is trying to prevent Hezbollah from returning to positions that threaten northern Israeli communities.

Lebanon And Israel

Vance also said the United States believes it can reach a formula that protects both sides.

“We believe it is possible to reach a situation in which both the territorial integrity of Lebanon and the security of Israel are protected,” he said.

That point also connects to Lebanese President Joseph Aoun’s own sovereignty message. As covered earlier in “Lebanese President: No One Negotiates On Lebanon’s Behalf,” Aoun has said Lebanon is a sovereign country and that no one can negotiate on its behalf.

In principle, Israel and Lebanon can agree on that. Lebanon should be sovereign. Israel should be secure. However, both goals require the same missing piece: Hezbollah cannot operate as a state within a state.

If Lebanon controls its territory, Hezbollah should not be able to drag the country into war. If Israel protects its citizens, it cannot ignore armed terrorists across the border.

A Shared Strategic Principle

For Israel and the United States, the principle is clear. Peace requires borders that mean something and governments strong enough to control their own territory.

President Donald Trump has built much of his foreign policy around strength, deterrence, and clear alliances. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has argued the same from Israel’s northern border.

Ultimately, JD Vance’s comments point to the real issue. Israel does not need Lebanese land. It needs Hezbollah terror kept away from Israeli homes.
