According to the IDF Spokesperson, an Al Jazeera photojournalist, Ahmed Samir Muhammad Washah, was killed Saturday in central Gaza, also served as a Hamas sniper operative.
The IDF reported that the Air Force eliminated Washah in a precise strike in the central Gaza Strip. The military said two additional Hamas terrorists were killed alongside him.
The Tanakh warns, “Keep far from a false matter” (Exodus 23:7). In this war, that verse speaks not only to courts or leaders. It also speaks to the battlefield of information, where Hamas has repeatedly used civilian roles, media platforms, hospitals, schools, and mosques as cover for terror.
A Hamas Sniper Operative

The IDF said Washah served in Hamas’s military wing as a sniper operative while also working as an Al Jazeera photojournalist.
According to the military, Washah advanced sniper attack plans and additional terrorist activity against IDF troops in Gaza in recent months. Therefore, the IDF said, he posed a direct threat to forces operating in the area.
The military also said Washah worked alongside his brother, Muhammad Samir Muhammad Washah. According to the IDF, his brother was a key Hamas operative who also worked under the cover of Al Jazeera and was killed in April.
The War Over Truth
The strike highlights a central challenge for Israel. Hamas does not fight as a normal army. Instead, it embeds itself inside civilian life and then uses civilian labels to shape global outrage after Israel responds.
That does not make every journalist a terrorist. However, it does mean Israel must expose terrorists who use press credentials as cover. Free nations cannot allow terror groups to turn journalism into a shield for attacks.
This is also where the U.S.-Israel alliance matters. Both nations face enemies who exploit openness, media, law, and public opinion. President Donald Trump has often emphasized the need to identify enemies clearly. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has made the same argument throughout Israel’s war against Hamas.
Moral Clarity In War
Israel’s duty is not only to fight. It must also tell the truth about who it is fighting.
The IDF affirms Washah was not targeted because he carried a camera. It says he was targeted because he served as a Hamas sniper and posed a threat to Israeli troops.
Ultimately, moral clarity means refusing Hamas’s disguises. A terrorist does not become immune because he stands behind a press title, and Israel cannot be expected to ignore threats to its soldiers.
