A new Hamas attack warning has prompted Defense Minister Israel Katz to order heightened IDF readiness in Gaza ahead of October 7. Israeli intelligence indicates that Hamas may attempt attacks against Israeli forces on Wednesday, the third anniversary of the 2023 massacre.

Katz instructed the military to “increase its readiness and be prepared for any possible scenario in Gaza.” He cited intelligence suggesting Hamas intends to carry out assaults against Israeli troops specifically on the anniversary. The IDF is already conducting operations in Gaza as the alert takes effect.

Nehemiah 4:9 captures the balance between faith and vigilance: “Nevertheless we made our prayer unto our God, and set a watch against them day and night.” Three years after October 7, remembrance cannot be separated from readiness. Israel’s security forces are approaching the anniversary as both a national day of mourning and a possible operational threat.

IDF Raises Alert Ahead of October 7

Katz ordered commanders to treat every warning with “utmost seriousness.” He said forces should act forcefully on credible intelligence to prevent attacks before they occur. The defense minister also demanded preparations for worst-case scenarios.

His statement included an unusually severe warning about the consequences of an attack. Katz said that if Israeli troops are harmed, “Hamas and the population of Gaza will pay a heavy price, beyond all proportion.” He said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had delivered the same message during their recent visit to the Kissufim area.

The anniversary has already carried operational significance in previous years. On October 7, 2025, terrorists in Gaza launched a rocket toward the border community of Netiv Ha’asara. According to the Times of Israel, no rocket fired from Gaza has crossed into Israeli territory since that incident.

Israel’s heightened posture also reflects lessons from the original attack. Intelligence warnings before October 7, 2023 were not translated into sufficient defensive preparation, despite signs that Hamas had developed and rehearsed a major cross-border assault. Recent reporting on internal Hamas documents has further described a deliberate effort to convince Israel that the group was avoiding escalation before the attack.

The Threat Extends Beyond Gaza

The warning comes as Israel continues tracking Hamas operatives involved in the October 7 massacre. Katz said Monday that Israeli intelligence assesses roughly 6,000 terrorists crossed into Israel that day. He said around 4,000 have since been killed, while security agencies continue pursuing those who remain.

The concern is not limited to the Gaza battlefield. That wider threat environment was also visible in “UK Security Threats: Hamas Plot and RAF Fairford Arrests,” which examined an alleged Hamas-linked plot against Jewish and Israeli targets in Europe alongside separate security arrests near a British base used by American forces. The cases are different, but both underscore why intelligence cooperation against terrorism extends far beyond Israel’s borders.

That international dimension also matters to Washington. Hamas has been designated a Foreign Terrorist Organization by the United States since 1997. U.S.-Israel security cooperation includes intelligence coordination, military exercises, weapons development and missile defense programs designed to address shared regional threats.

For Israel, however, October 7 carries a uniquely immediate meaning. Communities along the Gaza border are still rebuilding after the 2023 assault, even as thousands of residents have returned. The possibility that Hamas could use the anniversary for another attack gives military readiness both strategic and emotional significance.

Memory Must Be Matched by Vigilance

Israel’s covenantal responsibility before God includes defending Jewish life while preserving the sovereignty that allows the Jewish people to protect themselves. October 7 exposed what can happen when a determined enemy studies weaknesses and finds an opening. The anniversary therefore carries a responsibility not only to remember the murdered, but to prevent another breach.

America’s covenantal tradition developed through a different national history, yet it likewise connects liberty with the obligation to defend citizens from organized violence. The U.S.-Israel security relationship reflects that practical responsibility through intelligence sharing, defense cooperation and counterterrorism coordination.

The immediate question is whether Hamas will act on the intelligence Israel says it has received. Katz’s order makes clear that the IDF does not intend to treat the anniversary as merely symbolic. Three years after the massacre, Israel is approaching October 7 with mourning, memory and military readiness at the same time.
