A New Chapter for Lebanon: Joseph Aoun Elected President

The Lebanese Parliament in Beirut convened this morning (Thursday and elected the Chief of Staff of the Lebanese Army Joseph Aoun as the country’s president. Aoun won during the second round, and declared his aim is to “restore what Israel destroyed in the south of the country and the southern suburbs of Beirut.”

A Second Round Victory: Hezbollah’s Withdrawal
Initially, Hezbollah resisted Aoun’s candidacy but withdrew its opposition after Suleiman Frangieh, their preferred candidate, stepped aside and expressed his support for Aoun’s candidacy. Aoun secured the presidency during a second-round vote with 99 out of 128 votes, though Lebanon’s constitution now requires amendments to allow him to serve concurrently as president and army chief. His election reflects shifting political dynamics in Lebanon, with Hezbollah’s influence visibly recalibrating under internal and regional pressures.

Israel’s Response: Hope for Stability
Israel has conveyed messages to Beirut’s political circles expressing “support” for Aoun’s presidential bid, as well as receptivity to a security cooperation with him.

Israel extended a message of cautious support for Aoun’s election, expressing optimism for improved relations and stability in the region. Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar congratulated Lebanon, stating, “I congratulate Lebanon upon the election of a new President, following a lengthy political crisis. I hope that this choice will contribute towards stability, a better future for Lebanon and its people and to good neighborly relations.”

Biblical Alliances: A Prayer for Peace Between Israel and Lebanon

As in the days of King Solomon, we hope for strong relations between Israel and Lebanon, praying for peace and security reminiscent of biblical times. King Solomon and King Hiram of Tyre shared such a close alliance that Hiram provided materials to build the Temple in Jerusalem, demonstrating his unwavering support as a true ally.  “There were peaceful relations between Hiram and Solomon, and the two of them made a treaty.” – 1 Kings 5:12

With Aoun’s election and the imminent inauguration of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, Israeli officials are hopeful for maintaining a ceasefire and strengthening security conditions along the northern border.
