Takeaways

  • Marwan Barghouti is serving five life sentences for murder, not a metaphor for injustice.
  • Over 20 Marvel stars signed a petition demanding his release.
  • Barghouti’s victims include a monk, a mother of two, and diners at a Tel Aviv restaurant.
  • The campaign, “Free Marwan Now,” started in Turkey and calls on the United Nations to act.
  • Jewish tradition has a name for this: compassion that becomes cruelty.

More than 20 actors tied to the Marvel Cinematic Universe have put their names on a petition demanding Israel release Marwan Barghouti. Benedict Cumberbatch signed it. So did Mark Ruffalo, Don Cheadle, Cate Blanchett, Tilda Swinton, and Ian McKellen.

Barghouti is not a dissident writer or a jailed protester. He is a convicted terrorist serving five life sentences plus 40 years, found guilty by an Israeli court in 2004 of murder, attempted murder, and running a terrorist organization.

📖Read here about why antisemitic conspiracy theories spread so easily.
Who Barghouti Actually Is

The court convicted Barghouti for three separate attacks. In June 2001, gunmen under his direction shot and killed a Greek Orthodox monk on the road to Ma’ale Adumim. just outside of Jerusalem. In January 2002, they murdered Yoela Hen, a mother of two, near Givat Ze’ev, also just outside of Jerusalem. In March 2002, a grenade and gun attack on the Seafood Market restaurant in Tel Aviv killed three more civilians and wounded 25.

He also received two 20-year sentences, one for a car bomb plot near a Jerusalem mall, another for leading the Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades, the group behind dozens of suicide bombings during the Second Intifada. Courts acquitted him on 33 additional murder counts for lack of evidence. That leaves five confirmed. Not zero.

A Campaign Built on a Lie

“Free Marwan Now” describes Barghouti as a Palestinian politician. Some backers have gone as far as calling him a “Palestinian Mandela.” Mandela fought apartheid laws.  Barghouti’s men fought civilians eating dinner.

The campaign claims Israeli prisons mistreat him and deny him legal rights. The Israeli Prison Service has called those claims false. None of that has slowed the celebrity signatures.

Mark Ruffalo has drawn separate criticism this year. Paramount accused him of invoking antisemitic tropes while attacking the studio’s incoming Jewish leadership. For someone who’s made a living playing the Hulk, that’s a strange direction to lead his real-world reputation.

What Jewish Tradition Says About This

The Hebrew Bible has a warning for exactly this kind of misplaced mercy. Proverbs 12:10 says the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel. Rabbinic tradition built on that verse with this teaching: whoever shows compassion to the cruel ends up cruel to the compassionate.

The Midrash points back to King Saul. Saul spared Agag, the Amalekite king, against a direct command to finish the job. That single act of misplaced mercy cost Israel dearly for generations. History has a habit of repeating that mistake in new costumes.

The Trivia Nobody in Hollywood Is Mentioning

Barghouti was tried in an open civilian court, not a military tribunal. He had legal representation throughout. The Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades, the group he led, is designated a terrorist organization by the United States, the European Union, and Israel alike. None of these facts made it into the Hollywood petition.

Standing With the Actual Victims

Twenty famous names lending their signatures to free a man convicted of five murders is not an act of conscience. It is a failure of one. Eli Dahan, Yosef Habi, and Salim Barakat died at that restaurant table. Yoela Hen never made it home to her children. A monk was shot on a highway for no reason beyond hatred.

Hollywood can call this justice if it wants. The five life sentences say otherwise. Real compassion defends people who were murdered for existing, not the man who ordered it.
