A Creative Renewal in the Heart of Jaffa
The restored mosaic “Andromeda-Netta Barzilai” was officially unveiled today (Wednesday) in Jaffa, celebrating artistic renewal, cultural diversity, and commemorating the memory of October 7 victim Shani Luk. Originally created in 2018 by mosaic artist Rinat Luk Elhayek to honor Netta Barzilai’s Eurovision victory, the artwork—crafted from 100,000 beer bottle caps—stands as an artistic and cultural landmark in the heart of Jaffa. Michael Wolle, Deputy CEO of the Jaffa Development Authority and Community Director, attended the opening ceremony, highlighting the mosaic’s significance as a testament to Jaffa’s vibrant cultural heritage and unity amidst challenges.
The mosaic, located at the corner of Yehuda Hayamit and Dolphin Streets, draws inspiration from the mythological tale of Andromeda, the princess saved by a prince captivated by her beauty. The artist described the piece as a celebration of multiculturalism and the triumph of a free spirit over rigid norms, embodying the biblical truth: “I will walk about in freedom, for I have sought out your precepts.” – Psalms 119:45.

Dedicated to Shani Luk’s Memory
The meticulous, hand-crafted restoration carries deep personal significance, as Luk Elhayek is the aunt of Shani Luk OBM, tragically murdered at the Nova music festival on October 7. This tribute weaves together Israel’s vibrant artistic identity with its collective mourning and resilience.
The restored mosaic joins a collection of public artworks across Tel Aviv-Jaffa, connecting the city’s rich history to its enduring hope for the future, and attracting both residents and visitors. Netta Barzilai, present at the unveiling, expressed her gratitude for the honor and the mosaic’s unique role in commemorating creativity and memory.
