Since taking office in 2021, President Isaac Herzog has prioritized transparency and exercised his legal authority to grant pardons, reflecting a commitment to justice with compassion. Official data released today (Tuesday) reveals a notable 45% increase in pardons granted over the past year, driven by efforts to support soldiers, reservists, and marginalized groups while maintaining strict standards for serious offenses.

Pardon Requests Reflect a Nation in Need

Over the past year, 2,000 new pardon requests were filed—a 23% increase compared to the previous year. While many requests sought to reduce the duration of criminal record registration rather than early release, 571 pardons were approved, benefiting soldiers, reservists, and individuals working to rebuild their lives.

“Iron Swords” Framework: Honoring Soldiers’ Service
A significant number of pardons were granted under the “Iron Swords” framework, which prioritizes those who served during last year’s war. Soldiers and reservists with criminal records can apply for pardons if they meet the terms outlined by the committee, recognizing their contributions to Israel’s defense.

Advocacy for Marginalized Communities

The President’s Office has extended its efforts to support disabled IDF veterans, cannabis-related offenders, and women escaping cycles of exploitation. Michal Herzog, the president’s wife, has been instrumental in raising awareness and supporting initiatives for female sex workers seeking a fresh start, hosting a special event at the President’s Residence on December 4, 2024, to raise awareness about the terms of these pardons.  This event was also attended by representatives from numerous civil aid organizations focusing on this issue.

Clear Boundaries for Justice
While embracing a compassionate approach, President Herzog has set firm limits on pardons, excluding sexual offenders, perpetrators of domestic violence, and those involved in traffic or environmental crimes. In response to rising violence within the Arab community, no pardons are granted for weapons-related offenses tied to these issues, ensuring public safety remains a top priority.

Faith and Justice Intertwined

President Herzog’s balanced approach reflects a deep commitment to justice and mercy, echoing the Biblical call in Micah 6:8: “What does the Lord require of you? To act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.” Through compassionate reforms and firm principles, Israel continues to honor its values while supporting those striving for redemption and renewal.
