Israel’s Chief of Staff Steps Down | Minutes Later, Southern Command General Announces Resignation

The Chief of Staff, Herzi Halevi, announced in a letter to Defense Minister Israel Katz that he plans to step down on March 6, 2025, coinciding with the end of the first phase of the hostage deal and exactly 17 months since the start of the war. In a statement to the media, Halevi acknowledged responsibility for the IDF’s failure on October 7, while highlighting the military’s significant achievements and the progress of the hostage release agreement. He committed to using the remainder of his tenure to complete investigations, enhance the IDF’s readiness, and ensure a smooth transition to his successor. Southern Command General Yaron Finkelman has also announced his resignation, though without specifying a timeline.

Chief of Staff’s Letter: “This Decision Was Made Long Ago”

In a heartfelt letter to the Prime Minister and Defense Minister, IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi elaborated on his decision to step down, acknowledging the IDF’s failure on October 7: “The IDF under my command failed in its mission to protect the citizens of Israel. My responsibility for this horrific failure accompanies me every day, every hour, and it will remain with me for the rest of my life.” Despite this, Halevi highlighted the IDF’s remarkable achievements under his leadership, stating: “The IDF rose from an incredibly challenging starting point to conduct intense combat for over a year and three months across seven different war fronts. These military achievements have reshaped the Middle East, far surpassing expectations.” Halevi reaffirmed his decision to conclude his tenure on March 6, 2025, balancing personal accountability with pride in the IDF’s success in restoring Israel’s deterrence and strength.

We pray that the transfer of leadership will be as seamless and blessed as it was in the Bible when Moses entrusted leadership to Joshua. As it is written: “So God said to Moses, ‘Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit of leadership, and lay your hand on him… Give him authority so the whole of Israel will obey him.’” – Numbers 27:18-20. May God grant wisdom, strength, and guidance to those stepping into leadership, ensuring the safety and prosperity of Israel.
