After an extended 2.5-year tenure due to the escalation of war, Deputy Chief of Staff Major General Amir Baram has announced his decision to step down, citing he has “reached the limits of his current role.” As the IDF faces significant political and operational challenges, this leadership transition could lead to an unprecedented interim appointment to fill this critical position.
Baram’s Statement and Commitment to Service
In his resignation letter to IDF Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi, dated December 30, 2024, Baram explained his decision: “Several months ago, at your request and in coordination with the Minister of Defense, I extended my tenure by six months (until February 2025) due to the intensified war effort. Traditionally, the tenure of the Deputy Chief of Staff is two years. Now that the war’s intensity has significantly decreased, I feel that my capacity to contribute in this role is limited. Additionally, I have no intention of serving a three- or four-year term (a double tenure). Therefore, I request to conclude my service at the agreed date. Naturally, I remain willing to serve in any role required in the defense establishment in the future.”
A Leadership Void Complicated by Political Stalemate
B Baram’s departure comes during a freeze on senior military appointments imposed by Defense Minister Israel Katz. This unprecedented situation has left the IDF considering an interim Deputy Chief of Staff—an extraordinary measure in its history. Leading candidates for the role include Major Generals Uri Gordin, Tamir Yadai, Eyal Harel, and Rafi Milo, with Gordin believed to be the top contender. However, the political stalemate complicates the decision. Senior military officials have indicated this option is under serious consideration.
Leading Candidates for the Position
Prominent names being considered to replace Baram include:
Major General Uri Gordin – Current Commander of the Northern Command.
Major General Tamir Yadai – Former Commander of the Ground Forces.
Major General Eyal Harel – Head of the Planning Directorate.
Major General Rafi Milo – Commander of the Home Front Command.

Gordin is believed to be the top contender. However, the political stalemate complicates the decision.
IDF Acknowledges Baram’s Service
An IDF spokesperson confirmed the resignation and expressed gratitude for Baram’s contributions:
“The Chief of Staff expressed deep appreciation for the Deputy’s significant contributions during the war and beyond. The Deputy Chief of Staff is prepared to take on any role as needed.”
Baram’s leadership during critical moments of conflict has left a legacy of resilience and adaptability within the IDF.
Trusting in God’s Guidance for Israel’s Defense
As the IDF navigates this leadership transition, it reflects the enduring challenges faced by Israel in safeguarding its people and preparing for future threats. Baram’s dedication reminds us of the biblical call to remain vigilant and trust in God’s provision for Israel’s defense:
“The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in Him, and He helps me.” – Psalm 28:7
Let us pray for wisdom among Israel’s leaders, strength for its defenders, and divine guidance as the nation confronts both internal and external challenges.
