Houthis Consider Imposing Passage Fees in Bab el-Mandeb Strait
According to a Reuters report, the Houthis in Yemen are discussing the possibility of collecting passage fees from vessels sailing in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait in the Red Sea. The issue was discussed in Iran last month during a visit by a Houthi delegation for the funeral of Ali Khamenei.
The initiative’s goal is to increase pressure on the U.S. and to formalize payments in international maritime passages, while Chinese ships are expected to be exempt from this measure.
