Dor Ben Simchon HY”D: Writing History In Real Time

Dor Ben Simchon HY”D, a heroic IDF officer who fell in Lebanon, left behind words that now read like a national testament: “We are writing history here in real time.”

Israeli reports identified him as Lt. Col. Dor Gedalia Ben Simchon, 32, from Kibbutz Beit HaShita. He commanded the 52nd Battalion in the 401st Armored Brigade.

The Tanakh says, “Be strong and courageous” (Joshua 1:9). That command speaks directly to soldiers who stand between Israel and those who seek its destruction.

It also speaks to the families who carry the cost.

A Commander In Lebanon

According to Israeli reports, Ben Simchon fell overnight in southern Lebanon alongside three additional IDF soldiers. Reports said the soldiers were killed after a Hezbollah explosive drone struck their tank.

The loss shook Israel because Ben Simchon was not only a commander. He represented the generation now carrying the defense of the Jewish state on its shoulders.

Less than a month before he fell, he spoke about the weight of the moment.

“There are things that still can’t be told,” he said. “But I assume people will talk about them in the future. We are writing history here in real time.”

A Family Of Service

His wife, Maj. A., serves as a deputy battalion commander in the Combat Intelligence Collection Corps. The couple has two daughters.

“There were a few moments when he thought about leaving the army,” she said. “And I kept both of us in the system.”

That sentence tells a larger Israeli story. In Israel, military service is not only a career. For many families, it becomes a shared mission.

The same value stands at the heart of the U.S.-Israel alliance. Free nations survive because ordinary families produce extraordinary defenders.

Writing Jewish History

Ben Simchon’s words matter because Israel’s soldiers do not defend an abstract idea. They defend the land, the people, and the future of Jewish life.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly insisted that Israel must preserve its freedom to act against terror threats. On the northern front, that principle is measured in lives.

Ultimately, Dor Ben Simchon’s story reflects the burden and honor of a sovereign Jewish state.

Israel writes history in real time because its sons and daughters still stand guard.

May his memory be a blessing.
