Minister Amichai Chikli warned that Israel must look beyond Iran and direct resources toward other regional threats, especially Syria and Turkey. In an interview with Army Radio, Chikli said: “We will be at war with Syria sooner or later. Syria and Turkey are a far more troubling issue than Iran.”
The Tanakh teaches, “The prudent one sees danger and takes cover” (Proverbs 22:3). That verse captures the core of Chikli’s warning. Israel cannot afford to see only the threat in front of it while new dangers form on its borders.
A Broader Threat Map

Chikli’s comments came as Israel continues to watch major shifts across the region. Iran remains a central threat through its nuclear program, missiles, and terror proxies. However, Chikli argued that Syria and Turkey now require serious Israeli attention.
His warning reflects growing concern over the new Syrian leadership of Ahmed al-Sharaa and Turkey’s expanding role in Syria. Reuters reported that Turkey had scoped out Syrian air bases for possible deployments before Israeli strikes hit those sites in 2025. Reuters also reported that Turkey has remained deeply involved in Syria under al-Sharaa.
Syria, Turkey, And Israel

For Israel, the concern is not theoretical. A hostile Syria backed by Turkey could create a new front near Israel’s northeast. It could also threaten the strategic depth Israel needs near the Golan Heights.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has already stressed that any future arrangement with Syria must protect Israel’s security needs. Reuters reported that Netanyahu said a Syria deal would require a demilitarized buffer zone extending from Damascus to Mount Hermon.
This is also where U.S.-Israel coordination matters. President Trump has pushed a regional strategy that demands strength, deterrence, and clear commitments from hostile actors. For Israel, that means diplomacy cannot come at the price of blindness.
Strategic Vigilance
Chikli’s message is ultimately about vigilance. A sovereign Jewish state must identify threats early, prepare seriously, and refuse to gamble with its survival.
That same principle sits at the heart of the American-Israeli alliance. Free nations preserve peace by staying strong, telling the truth, and confronting danger before it reaches their gates.
