In September 2024, an extraordinary maritime rescue operation prevented an environmental catastrophe when an international rescue team saved an oil tanker targeted by Houthi missiles and drones. The tanker, which was at risk of spilling massive amounts of crude oil into the Red Sea, was salvaged in a high-risk mission under constant threat of missile fire.

In September 2024, an extraordinary maritime rescue operation averted a massive environmental catastrophe in the Red Sea after an international team salvaged an oil tanker targeted by Houthi missiles and drones. The mission, conducted under the constant threat of missile fire, successfully prevented a spill of 150,000 tons of crude oil.

150,000 Tons of Crude Oil Nearly Spilled

The Greek oil tanker MT Saunion, carrying 150,000 tons of crude oil, was struck in August by Houthi missile fire and explosive drones, igniting a devastating fire and forcing the crew to evacuate. Fears mounted over a potential environmental disaster that could have polluted the Red Sea and harmed countless ecosystems. An international rescue mission—the largest of its kind—was launched, involving over 200 participants, private companies, and naval forces from multiple nations.

By September, after three weeks of intense efforts, European Union rescue teams managed to pump the crude oil from the damaged tanker and tow it to Egyptian shores using seven vessels. The operation, coordinated amidst ongoing missile threats, was hailed as a landmark achievement in maritime disaster response.

International Cooperation: A Beacon of Hope

Greek Maritime Minister Christos Stylianides expressed gratitude for the mission’s success, stating, “We feel tremendous relief that we were able to prevent a devastating environmental disaster. This was a complex and dangerous mission, but the outcome is truly gratifying.”

Greece credited Saudi Arabia’s crucial support for the operation, highlighting the collaboration as a turning point in bilateral relations. This partnership laid the groundwork for Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’s recent visit to Riyadh, emphasizing strengthened ties between the two nations.

A Biblical Reflection on Stewardship

This operation reflects the power of international cooperation and the responsibility to safeguard God’s creation. As stewards of the earth, we are reminded of the Lord’s command to care for the world He has entrusted to us:
“The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.” – Genesis 2:15

May this collaboration inspire continued efforts to protect the environment and promote peace in the region, as we trust in God’s providence for a restored and thriving creation.
