This week, Ziv Medical Center in northern Israel made medical history by performing the country’s first brain surgery using the state-of-the-art ‘Leica ARveo 8’ surgical microscope. The procedure involved removing a tumor located at the base of the skull—an especially complex area due to its proximity to critical nerves and blood vessels, requiring exceptional precision.

“Like an Illuminated Roadmap”

“The ability to see blood vessels, tumor tissue, and nerves in such high resolution—almost like looking at an illuminated roadmap—completely transformed the course of the surgery,” said Dr. Samuel Tobias, head of Ziv’s Neurosurgery Unit. “It’s a significant advancement in the level of safety and precision we can now provide to patients.”

Prof. Salman Zarka, Director of Ziv Medical Center, praised the achievement: “This is a meaningful milestone for medicine in the north. We are committed to investing in groundbreaking technologies.”

Revolutionizing the Field of Neurosurgery

The Leica ARveo 8 is considered a revolutionary tool in the fields of neurosurgery and microsurgery. It features real-time imaging technology that highlights essential anatomical structures—such as blood vessels, tumors, and delicate tissues—while enabling advanced surgical navigation. This combination allows surgeons to operate with unprecedented accuracy and helps preserve critical brain functions.

What sets this microscope apart is its integration of both optical and digital imaging, with dynamic adjustments made throughout the procedure. Its 3D 4K viewing capabilities also allow residents and trainees to observe the surgery in real time, transforming the operating room into a high-level learning environment.

A key advantage of the system is its software-based platform, which allows for continuous upgrades—ensuring the technology remains cutting-edge over time. It offers a smart, efficient solution that meets evolving medical needs while maintaining a consistently high standard of care.
