Columbia University announced the termination of Professor Katherine Franke, a senior law professor and director of the Center for Gender and Sexuality, following an internal investigation that found she violated university policies by making discriminatory statements about Israeli and Jewish students, ending her two-decade tenure in prominent academic roles.
Accusations of Incitement Against Israeli Students: “A Threat After Military Service”
Professor Katherine Franke’s termination followed controversial remarks she made during a televised interview about a January 2024 campus incident, where an Israeli student allegedly spilled a foul-smelling liquid on pro-Palestinian demonstrators and later won a $395,000 settlement for an “excessive response” by the university. In the interview, Franke described Israeli students who had served in the military as a “threat to others’ safety.” She further alleged that “it is well-known that they harass Palestinians and other students on our campus,” and called for stricter university measures to ensure campus safety.
Backlash from Faculty and Students
Franke’s comments ignited widespread outrage among faculty members and students, with formal complaints accusing her of making harmful generalizations about all Israeli students and crossing the boundaries of free speech. The investigation further uncovered inflammatory social media posts in which Franke labeled one of her complainants a “genocidal murderer,” intensifying criticism of her actions.
Upholding Equality and Justice
An independent investigation concluded that Franke’s actions violated Columbia’s equality policies, prompting her dismissal. The university emphasized its commitment to protecting all students from discrimination and ensuring a safe learning environment. This decision highlights the importance of addressing harmful stereotypes and bias, particularly as campuses face increasing polarization over Israel and the Middle East.
Franke Denounces Decision as Political Retaliation
In response, Franke claimed her dismissal was politically motivated and linked to her support for Palestinian rights. She stated, “The administration allowed manipulative use of disciplinary complaints to curtail my actions.”
As debates over academic freedom and free speech grow increasingly heated on American campuses, Columbia’s decision highlights the complex challenges of addressing these issues in a deeply polarized environment.
With this decision, Columbia stands up for truth in education, taking a firm stand against discrimination and bias. True education is rooted in reverence for God, which forms the foundation for genuine wisdom and understanding.
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” – Proverbs 1:7
