9-Year-Old Boy Hospitalized in Serious Condition After Contracting Rare Amoeba in Sea of Galilee
The boy is sedated and on a ventilator at Rambam Hospital after developing a brain inflammation. The investigation indicates he swam at Kursi Beach about a week before being hospitalized.
A laboratory test conducted by the Ministry of Health confirmed the suspicion of an infection with the rare amoeba Naegleria fowleri. This is a rare disease with a high mortality rate that is not transmitted from person to person and is not caused by drinking water, but rather by the entry of warm, fresh water containing the amoeba through the nose.
