Ship located tonight at 503 meters deep west of Israel’s coast, after a complex months-long search using advanced sensors and survey systems
The Altalena arrived in Israel in June 1948 carrying immigrants, Etzel fighters, weapons, and military equipment. The confrontation surrounding it became one of the most formative and painful events in the young state’s history, during which 16 Etzel members and three IDF soldiers were killed.
Ministers Itamar Ben Gvir and Amichai Eliyahu announced the discovery. Ben Gvir: “A historic and moving closure.” The findings and documentation from the depths of the sea are expected to be revealed at a press conference.
